So That Just Happened...
This week has been a real roller coaster for our community. First the Vice President comes out in support for gay marriage. YAY! Then a motivated and hateful group of voters passed Amendment 1, banning gay marriage in North Carolina. BOOOOO! And shortly after, we get word that the Colorado GOP killed the civil unions bill that seemed like it was on it's way to passing. HISS! But then something surprising happened. We gays were rightfully outraged and vocal, but there was an outpouring of straight supporters who were equally enraged by North Carolina and Colorado's actions. And then, everything changed. The President of the United States of America, the one who's views on gay marriage were said to be "evolving," did the right thing. He came out in support of gay marriage. BOOM.
Cynics will say that it's a political calculation. That we shouldn't be pawns in a political game. That words are great but actions are better. And while that's true, can we take a minute to just revel in the fact that the highest ranking political figure in this country, the first ever, just gave us his full support? It's so easy to take a trip to Bitterville when we're not quite there yet, but this is progress people. HUGE progress in a long long journey of equal rights. Some will say, it's not fast enough, but I will say, it's mother fucking happening! We've got more work to do around the world, but we're on our way and someday soon this will all be a dark distant memory in our hard fought history. I for one, just want to get him reelected so we can lock this down and get 'er done.
Everyday I read something about how much we're hated. Whether it's denying us rights, murdering our brethren, or a child disowned by their family. Every day I read this. And here I sit an out and proud gay man, someone who is able to see these words, these actions, as ignorance, and I am still affected by it. Whether you register it or not, these kinds of messages, that we're less than, that we're not right, seep in. And when I think about the young people who may not be as fully formed as us adults, I worry about what this does to them. So whether you question his motives or his actual plan, you can't argue that hearing the leader of a nation say that he supports you, and all that you are, is one incredible message to send out to the world. However delayed it was, it's out there now and there's no going back.
I am proud to be a gay American today.
But now onto the real work, as both bases are going to be fired up. Let's get him back in office so he can complete this longstanding mission.
Oh, and while we're at it, let's move the DNC Convention out of North Carolina.
Comments
It was the right thing to do.
Obama took a risk to come out for this, as the swing states he needs may not go for it like his bundlers in Hollywood will, but like LBJ in 1964, passing the civil rights act was the right thing to do, even as he said, this will lose the South for the democrats for a generation. In the longer run, young voters are for the decision, so the future is so against R-money and his ilk.
W & G had their influence and even greater is that President Obama has now given his support to gay marriage, for better or worse the influence is there. The vice president and president should be given our thanks for whatever support they can give. An important focus -- the message being "let's keep up the visibility in a positive way". Be visible, inclusive whenever you can. You nay Sayer's, weather jaded, pessimistic, political, just plain wrong or whatever --- should voice your opinions but be clear who is the better choice between Romney or Obama.
Peace and wellness ...

W & G?
What did Wallace and Gromit do?
Obama's announcement is nothing more than an OPINION. It doesn't hold any legal weight, and does not differ markedly from that of Mitt Romney: He, Obama, said he believes it is a "state issue" to decide on, exactly what Romney has said all along. Meanwhile, within sixty minutes of that "announcement" his campaign received a million dollars in donations. Remember, the Democrat party knows that it "owns" the gay vote. Many of Obama's money bundlers are GAY. They gave Axelrod an ultimatum: come out in favor of gay marriage, or we withold money. You know what happened. It's as simple as that. Meanwhile, back home on the ranch, the site where the Democrats foolishly planned their convention (NC) overwhelmingly voted to maintain marriage between man anId woman. I guess it is a sign of our power and position of strength that we can afford to take a back bencher from the Illinois state senate -- an inexperienced socialist like obama (aka "The One") and turn him into a President who lushes trillions of dollars down the toilet, threatens to tax us into oblivion (wait until Obamacare goes into effect)...
Tell me, what other country could afford to take such an expensive Affirmative Action move like that? and you useful idiots can't lap it up fast enough! Sad times for this country, sad, sad times. 16% are unemployed, please remember that.
the bottom line:marriage? yes. in time. hate act legislation? yes. in time. gay rights? yes; happening as we speak. but only because a lot of great, dedicated people put their intelligence and energy on the line for it. I only wish that so very many people I knew could have benefitted from this progression; this is my sadness, this is my joy. ): (:
It's great that Obama has gave his explicit support. I don't personally care what his motivations are. However what does bother me is that he went on to say that he feels it's up to each individual state to decide on the issue. If we had stuck to that mentality in the 60's, how many states do you think blacks would have remained second class citizens?
Guys,
Don't you see where this is going? Look at California, another "BLUE" state that has gay marriage. LATimes, not Sean Hannity, google it: huge $16B SHORTFALL inspite of massive tax increases, taxing the air they breathe out there.....""tax collections have not come in as high as expected and the economy isn’t growing as fast as hoped for"" This EXACTLY where Barack Obama wants to take this country, mandate massive government programs at taxpayer expense, redistribute wealth with the resulting huge tax increases to fund it, which will turn us into a socialist society with no liberty from the tyranny of government. My BLUE State of CT, same thing is happening, we also have "Gay marriage" and our Gov (D) instituted the largest tax increases in history, STILL the budget is short.
How many jobs were created by this "revelation" of Barack Obama? Not One. Millions in our country are not working adn have given up looking. Meanwhile Michelle (aka Mitch) Obama flies around the world just like the GRIFTER she is, can't even wait for the President, her attitude of "Don't EVEN Let them eat cake" is starting to grate and the adoring media won't be able to disguise it this time.........sorry Obama zombies.......
I find it so interesting that all these negative, and largely non relevant comments appear above. The President's OPINION to be sure was stated. But history shows that such can have great influence in establishing a new examination of society. The previous writer comments about California, in a surely lamentable condition, but not pertinent to President Obama's OPINION. How many are unemployed? Many! Does this have anything to do with the President's statement on gay marriage? Not at all. The President's motives may have not been pure, but his statement has purity, and significance to the gay community.
Yeppers SweetitalnCT opinions are irrelevant to the point or facts, let him support Romney or have a throw away vote. We support, applaud and defend the right choice no matter what the motives. The start is in the right direction and we build from there. Every social program started out weak and ineffective then gets stronger and better. Work with what you got. If all you got is piss and moan ---- shit or get off the pot!
... "no matter what the motives"...

Yes, I live in a deep blue liberal abomination of a state (but beautiful state) and these O. Zombies will undoubtedly go with this disaster another term, but that's OK.......We of the "silent majority" will speak again in November, and once again surprise those who will not see. We are in the same position that Moonbeam put California in, only we are much smaller. Gov. raised taxes massively and still the budget won't balance except by using tricks. Revenue has fallen off, not risen because of the tax increases. He has no where to go, and his approval rating in a blue state (dem. party controls everything in this state) is in the tank for his trouble. That is where Barry wants to take this entire country. He will saddle us with massive government spending and debt that can and will never be paid off, leaving us to do what he finally wants: Massive transfers of wealth through taxation, the destruction of free market capitalism and the result will be a socialist society in which GOVERNMENT calls the shots and rules your life, which is what he has planned for. The left wing base of the Democrat Party dropped Hillary Clinton like a bad habit because in Barack Obama (and also Michelle "don't even let them eat cake" Obama) they saw a Marxist revolutionary in their own image. The Clinton's had a successful presidency by doing things that enraged the left. The Democratic base is not going to countenance that a second time.
BTW - just for giggles and gags, there is a new book out on Obama's friendship with Oprah. Excerpts are in today's New York Post (nypost.com)........good for a laugh, it will definitely drive you Obama zombies crazy. I can just hear the denunciations. Google it.
IT'S GRADE SCHOOL MATH
50% of the people if NC believe gays should have a right to merry.
60% of the voters passed amendment one.
Some of you did not get off your asses and vote.
You can not blame someone else for exersizing their rights when you do not.
Now get up off that bar stool or couch and support the president who had the courage to suppoer you.
I can't believe all of the negativity stated because of the President's opinion. This year and last have been monumental for the LGBT community but there are these nay-sayers who denigrate these accomplishments. Perhaps the vote in NC wouldn't have turned out the way it did if all of the eligible LGBT's in NC got out to vote. Perhaps those demeaning the overturning of DADT never served in the military and don't realize how important it is to the well being of the Gay and Lesbian service members. There's no doubt in MY mind after having served 24 years and wondering EVERY DAY if that particular day would be my last as a military man. As the King of Siam said in the movie, The King and I, "Is a puzzlement."
It is vital, in this whole gay marriage campaign, to be specific about WHAT we are grateful for in politicians. Civil rights are rights, even if they have been unjustly denied us. We should never thank anyone for "giving" us our rights, even Gov. Cuomo of New York.
On the other hand, I am grateful to Cuomo and other politicians for spending their time and political capital helping to have our rights restored to us. That is admirable and a choice on their part for which they should be applauded.
This might sound like a small point -- but I think it is very important to keep in mind.
Their aren't any dates for when some type of human events take place. Its always a sort of circle of events where the nature of things makes the idea of rights an issue to one group but then another larger group pushs back. That pull and tug will go on forever as long as people have different opinions and certain cultural backgrounds continue to dominate for the last 5000 years where may be time to start some lodge groups and have a more level headed way of building community services and so forth.
I for one won't be voting for Obama in November. I don't vote for communists.
Then you wouldn't have voted for Eisenhower or Nixon either. Their programs were twice, if not three times, as liberal as Obama's. (Eisenhower was one of the most pro-science of Presidents, and would have been appalled at the climate-change deniers.)
Don't believe me? Look it up. Under Obama, the richest 1% pay 35% in taxes. Under Nixon, it was 70%. Under Eisenhower, NINETY-TWO percent.
Look it up.
OK...in all honesty i have never seen a more ridiculous line of comments. Who cares why he did it? If you support what is being done does it really matter? And, as far as it being all political...REALLY...shock...He is a politician and few things are done without political consequences and rewards being considered.
What is really happening is there are those who hate President Obama and everyone else. Those who hate President Obama refuse to acknowledge anything he has done. Each President has his haters, but this group seems much more willing to say anything to hurt him.
The debate is a good one but let us be clear: we have had more done for the LGBT communities under this administration than we would have under a McCain Administration, and I for one DO NOT CARE why. Debating all of the multitude of anti-Obama feelings is less important that admitting that they exist and inform the detractors. I am just happy that we are moving forward and not backwards.
You all need to go have a seat because if this were just to get votes, do you think he'd actuallybrisk losing his minority vote? From the ones with the highest ranking of disagreement against gay marriage? Hell no! It's been four years & people still can't get used to a black president running things, well I have news for you, get over it! He's got my vote!!!

Shane is correct. If Obama would do any thing , he would wait till his lam-duck session.
