Even though many people think of Texas as a conservative state, Houston has a thriving gay culture that goes unnoticed by many. Most of gay life in Houston is centered on Montrose, a vibrant community located in central Houston. Until the 1970’s Montrose was a seedy, dilapidated area but quickly became associated with gays with the rebuilding of the area in the 80’s. Montrose is home to numerous gay bars and restaurants and is the go-to place for gays in the city. Westbury is another area of Houston quickly becoming a gay hub. Since most of gay life is spaced around the neighborhood of Montrose, all types of guys can be found in the vicinity. Daddies and older men mingle alongside young guys and Bears as well. With so many gays in one place, different bars and clubs target different groups of gays and are therefore more specialized.

Mike’s Outpost attracts a slightly older crowd than most of the other bars in Montrose. Catering more to Daddies than Admirers, this bar has a laid-back feel and a more mature crowd. Ripcord also attracts many older guys and has a leather store located inside the bar.

Hunters will be attracted to both of the previously mentioned bars as they are where many of the Daddies congregate. Other hot spots for younger guys are South Beach in Montrose and Tony's Corner Pocket (located in the Fourth Ward).

Montrose Mining Company and Ripcord are two bars that serve the area’s thriving Bear community. Tony’s Corner Pocket also has a Bear Beer Bust on Sundays.
